Community Service Project

  1. connection with the September 19 business meeting, CALL’s Community Service Committee will collect donations to benefit the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The Alliance is headquartered in Chicago and their mission is to “conserve and restore the world’s largest freshwater resource using policy, education and local efforts, ensuring a healthy Great Lakes and clean water for generations of people and wildlife.” The lakes are an important natural resource as almost 40 million people rely on them for their drinking water every day. A few of the Alliance’s current campaigns include keeping out invasive species like zebra mussels and fighting to protect the lakes against plastic pollution and algae blooms caused by runoff pollution.

We will be collecting cash donations for the Alliance for the Great Lakes at the September meeting or you can make a monetary contribution online at https://donate.greatlakes.org. If you contribute online, please check “Dedicate my donation in honor of someone” and enter “Chicago Association of Law Libraries” in the Honoree’s Name section so we can track donations.

We are also organizing a day of service with the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Please join us on Saturday, September 28 at Montrose Beach in Chicago for a beach cleanup day. This cleanup will have two parts: from 7:00-9:00 AM, Team Leader Nathan Goldberg from the Alliance will be hosting a birdwalk at the Montrose Bird Sanctuary. If you are interested in joining the birdwalk, please meet at 6:45 AM at the Dock Restaurant. At 9:00 AM, we will head back from the Sanctuary, and join attendees at the Dock Restaurant for the beach cleanup. If you would not like to join the birdwalk and only want to participate in the cleanup, please arrive at the Dock Restaurant by 9:15 AM, the group will join you there. The cleanup is scheduled to go until 12:00 PM. Register for the cleanup at: http://www.greatlakesadopt.org/Secure/Event/15531 Directions and parking information are available from the Chicago Park District.
